Pinewood Derby on Saturday March 5th (7:30am – 3pm)

In the Trinity gym...

2011 Pack 249 Pinewood Derby Regulations

The Pinewood Derby is open to all registered Tigers Cubs, Cub Scouts and Webelos including second Year Webelos that have just bridged into Boy Scouts and their parents or adult partner.

Cars should be built by the Scouts with some adult guidance. Any technical assistance should be fully explained to the Scout so that he can use that knowledge on future projects. Adults are encouraged to build their own cars and run in the "open" class.

Only official BSA Pinewood Derby wheels and axles, consisting of 4 wheels and 4 axle nails, are permitted.

Cars must be built new for the race event – cars run in previous races are not eligible for the scout or open class races. Cars that have been previously raced may be run on the track as an "exhibition only" as time permits.

Before competing, all cars must pass inspection by the designated Race Officials to qualify for the race before the designated event start time. If, at registration, a car does not pass inspection, the owner will be informed of the reason for failure, and will be given time within the official weigh-in period to make the adjustment.

Cars will be impounded after they are inspected, and repairs will be limited to replacement of axles/wheels that are broken/lost during a race. The time allotted to repair cars will be limited by race officials.

The inspection points are as follows:

□ Use of official BSA Pinewood Derby Wheels and Axels

□ The width of the car shall not exceed 2 ¾ inches.

□ The length of the car shall not exceed 7 inches.

□ The weight of the car shall not exceed 5 ounces.

□ The height (including decoration) shall not exceed 3 7/16 inches (in order to clear finish line monitoring system)

□ The width between wheels shall be 1-¾ inches.

□ The bottom clearance between the car and the track shall be 3/8 inch.

Specifications:

Wheel base may be lengthened, but wheels may not extend beyond the body of the car.

"Machining" of wheels other than to remove molding imperfections is NOT allowed. Wheels may not be machined to reduce the contact of a standard wheel surface with the racing surface (wheels CANNOT be narrowed.)

□ Wheel bearings, washers, and bushings are prohibited.

□ The car shall not ride on any kind or type of springs.

□ Any details added must be within length, width, and weight limits.

□ The car must be freewheeling, with no starting devices.

□ No loose, unrestrained materials of any kind (such as loose lead shot) are allowed in the car.

□ The cars rest against a narrow starting pin so the car itself should not come to a sharp point in front and no part of the car may extend beyond the starting pin.

□ Only dry lubricant (such as graphite) is permitted. Due to housekeeping issues dry lubricant must be applied outside of the building and prior to inspection and impoundment of entry. Additional application of dry lubricant between races will not be permitted.

Race Procedures:

The rules of the day are the Cub Scout Law and Oath!

Scouts may designate a number for their car or a number will be assigned to them at check-in. The number may be displayed on the car. At the time of the race a sticker with the den number will be placed on the car to assist in the sorting of cars.

Each heat will be announced, and the heat will consist of up to three cars. Racers will place their car on the track. All other people must remain behind the barrier. Participants in subsequent heats will be alerted to prepare their cars for racing and be ready to proceed.

The starter will make sure the cars are on the track properly and then will start the race.

An electronic timer will record each car’s time.

The car whose nose is over the finish line first is the winner. An electronic scoring system will determine the first, second, and third place winners of each race. Points will be awarded during each heat based on finish position; i.e. first place – 3 points, second place – 2 points, third place – 1 point.

Point totals will be calculated at the end of the last race of the preliminary heats; entries with the top cumulative point totals will advance to the finals. Derby results will be determined by cumulative point totals from all final heats. An alternative scoring system may be established if an electronic "timed" scoring system is used.

If a car leaves the track, runs out of its lane, interferes will another car, loses an axles, etc., the race will be rerun. If the same car gets into trouble on the second run, the contestant is disqualified and automatically loses that race. If, on the second run, another car is interfered with, the race will be run a third time, but without the disqualified car.

When the results of each heat are recorded, the next heat will begin. The total number of heats will be determined based upon the number of participants.

Questions can be directed to the Pack Race Officials or Pack Committee.

Decisions of the Race Officials are final.
